Susan Lee Collier Vickers of Mendota, VA, age 76, passed away Friday May 12, 2023 at Johnson City Medical Center after a prolonged illness. She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Connie Collier of Mendota, VA. She was also preceded in death by her son Mark Alan Vickers, her sister Rita Davenport, and several nieces and nephews. Loved ones left to cherish her memory are her husband of 58 years, Sammy "Blue" Vickers, her son Ricky and wife Trina Vickers, her daughter Shannon and husband Jeff Eldreth, granddaughters Samantha and husband Britt Johnson and Kelsey Vickers, great grandsons Cade and Dax Johnson and great granddaughter Teegan Johnson, her sister Terri and husband Butch McCroskey, and a special god-granddaughter Heather Jessee. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews including Randy Powers, Tracey Bumgardner, Jason McCroskey and Josh McCroskey, and a host of heartbroken friends and extended family members including her many cousins.
Susan loved her family so much. She was unable to travel the last few years of her life, but she enjoyed traveling with her husband to visit family all across the country. Susan was a devoted wife, mother, and Nana and especially loved her title as a preacher's wife the last 16 years. She was a member of Mendota Baptist Church in Mendota VA, and was proud to be able to hear every sermon her husband preached until this last illness took away her ability to be at church. Her parting words to us all would be to love Jesus, love each other and say I love you too, hugs are an extension of your heart, work hard for your family, and forgive easily and quickly because we are not promised our next breath.
The service will be conducted by Brother Layton Bentley, Brother Randy Powers, and special singing by her nieces.
Pallbearers will be Bubby Pippin, Carson Roark, Ricky Millard, Gordon Barker, Dwayne Johnson, and Tommy Newton. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Puryea, Henry Lewis and Beth Gillenwater and Charlene and Loyd Clark.
Her viewing will be Monday May 15, 2023 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Mendota Baptist Church 2428 Mendota Rd. Mendota, VA followed immediately by the service and burial. Her body will be laid to rest in the Barker Family Cemetery, Pinnacle Rd. Mendota, VA.
The family would like to thank all of the medical team that has helped take care of Susan the last 8 years including Dr. Allison Whitman, Rob Rutherford FNP, Dr. Kramer, Dr. Rowell, Washington County and Goodson Kinderhook EMT's, Adoration Home Health, Bristol Rehab especially the wonderful CNAs, Bristol Regional Medical Center, and the wonderful care she received the last 2 weeks at Johnson City Medical Center 5th floor.
