Stevan David Demase

July 6, 1947 – January 22, 2025

Stevan David Demase, age 77, died peacefully at his Abingdon home on January 22, 2025. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Steve attended North Allegheny High School where he meant his sweetheart, Marsha, during their senior year. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh as a Civil Engineer. They married in 1969 at Heintz Chapel on campus. They were blissfully married for 55 years.

They were transferred to Abingdon, VA, seventeen years ago. Steve was the Project Director for Shaw Group at the Virginia City Hybrid Energy Plant in St. Paul.

Throughout his career, Steve supervised the building of industrial plants in the United States and in foreign countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia and Australia. He, Marsha and their two young children, lived in Brisbane, Australia for two years while he built a Coal Preparation plant in the Outback. He also supervised the building of Steel Mills, Waste Management plants, a Nickel-producing plant, and a Waferboard plant. His career enabled him to also travel through Europe and Asia. Steve loved seeing the world.

During retirement, he pursued his love of woodworking and was proud to be an artisan at Holston Mountain Artisans on Main Street. Steve designed and created small tables, quilt racks, bird feeders, fairy doors, kitchen spoons, and a folding child’s rocking chair. His other passions included gardening and cooking. He won several awards at the Higher Ed. Center’s Soup Tasting Events. He and Marsha also loved attending the Barter Theatre and dining in many of the wonderful restaurants in Abingdon.

Steve adored his family, coaching sports for his son, Stevan, and daughter, Rachel. He later was so proud of his three grandsons and their involvement in sports. And he was delighted to get a granddaughter eight years ago.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Joseph Charles and Elsie Demase; his grandparents, Lorenzo and Lucille Demase; his brother, Lawrence Alfred Demase; and his aunt, Sarah Battaglia Tokash.

Survivors include his wife, Marsha Lynn Demase; their son, Stevan Jr, and his wife, Valerie; their daughter, Rachel Elizabeth Demase; brother Joseph Charles Demase, Jr.; sister-in-law, Patricia Demase; nephews, Michael Demase, John Joseph Demase and his wife Kindra; a niece, Morgan Kate Demase Copeland; their grandchildren, Kaleb, Devin, Darrion and Trinity; and cousins Lucy Stimmell, Gina Miller, Carol Viktorian and David Battaglia.

A memorial service will be held this Saturday, January 25, at the Abingdon United Methodist Church on E. Main Street, Reverend Paul Seay and Reverend Glenn Patterson officiating. The service is at 2:00, with visitation at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Abingdon United Methodist Church.
