Sondra Jean Stanley Prater

Updated: Nov 20, 2023

Damascus, Virginia

Sondra Jean Stanley Prater went to her heavenly home on Sunday, November 12, 2023. Jean was born on August 31, 1941 to the late Coy and Ethel Stanley in Damascus, VA. She was a lifetime member of Wright's Chapel United Methodist Church where she was truly the hands and feet of Jesus. Jean enjoyed singing in the choir and serving in her women’s ministry group, as well as serving her community by helping at the local food bank and packing backpacks for students.

Jean is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Terry Prater, and four children: Pam Smith (Tim), Tammy Williams (Tom), Terry Prater, Jr. (Elizabeth), and Meghan Tolliver (Jason); eight grandchildren: Alicia McRae (Chris), Emily Tressler (Zachary), Adam Williams (Akili), Casey Rosenbalm (Cody), Stacey Osborne (Scott), Michael Cornett (India), Morgan Smith (Maryanna), and Caleb Smith (Emma); and 15 great grandchildren: Lily & Robert Tressler, Griffin & Meyer Rosenbalm, Micah & Liam Smith, Caroline McRae, Katelyn, Ethan, and Allie Williams, Tyler and Madison Turner, Isaac, Eli and Noah Osborne. She also has three sisters Brenda McCall (Eddie), Reba Heath (Curt) and Karen Smith (Ray) and one sister-in-law Shirley Neely. In addition to her parents, Jean is preceded in death by her brother, Bill Neely and a grandson, Andy Williams.

To know her was to love her. Jean was so many things to so many people. She was "sweetheart", sister, aunt, mom, Nana, banker, neighbor, and friend. Jean loved attending school and church events and always had a smile on her face and a kind word to offer. She opened her home and her heart to so many over the years and the impact she had on this world will live on in the beautiful legacy that she built.

The family would like to say a special thank you to the precious hospice caregivers who took such great care of the entire family over the last 11 months. May God bless you, Mary Ray and Kristi White.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Frost Funeral Home in Abingdon, VA. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, VA at 3:00 pm. Morgan Smith, Jean's grandson, will officiate the service. Pallbearers will include: Caleb Smith, Zachary Tressler, Chris McRae, Cody Rosenbalm, Lee Musick, and Tom Musick. Honorary pallbearers will include Bob Cook, Randy Evans, and David Fletcher.
