Roger Jerome Owens, 72, of Abingdon, Va., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 02, 2019, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was born on January 15, 1947, in Washington County, Va., to the late Bradley Davis Owens, Sr. and Dorothy M. King. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Peggy Joyce Owens and Shelia Coleman; and one brother, Bradley Owens, Jr.
Roger was a retired self-employed contractor. He loved to work in his garden and spend time with his Alpacas. He was a member of Painter Creek Church of Christ where he served as a greeter, sang in the choir and worked with the outreach program. Roger never met a stranger, and loved to spend time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 26 ½ years, Nancy Owens; six children, Steven Owens of Gloucester, Va., Chris Owens of Gloucester, Va., Mike Owens of Dayton, OH, Angie Walkup (Brad) of Abingdon, Va., Krystal Compton (Randy) of Oakwood, Va., and Greg Owens (Sue) of Abingdon; one brother, Johnny Owens of Newport News, Va.; mother-in-law, Mervil Rowe of Abingdon, Va.; 14 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, May 4, 2019, at Painter Creek Church of Christ, 24579 Green Spring Rd., Abingdon, Va. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., on Sunday at the church with Minister Mark Gaminde officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jesse Owens, Donnie Melvin, Bruce Owens, Seth Sauer, Patrick Bowman and Perry Baines. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Painter Creek Church of Christ.
