October 11, 1950—June 14, 2025
The Reverend Dr. Ralph M. Kidd, 74, of Abingdon, Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025. A beloved pastor, devoted husband, cherished father and grandfather, and faithful friend, Ralph leaves behind a legacy of grace, storytelling, service, and spiritual guidance that touched countless lives.
Born on October 11, 1950, Ralph was the son of the late Ralph M. Kidd and Lillias Elswick Kidd. He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn L. Kidd; their children, Ella Catherine Kidd, Tyler G. Kidd and wife Margaret T. Kidd, and Troy H. Kidd and wife Carey A. Kidd; and two adored grandchildren, Maxwell Kidd and Grant Kidd. He is also survived by his sister, Belva Kidd Tiller and her husband Edward Tiller, as well as dear lifelong friends Carlton “Merf” Shufflebarger and Jay and Joan Leftwich.
Ralph faithfully served as clergy in the United Methodist Church for over 50 years, ministering to churches across Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. A gifted preacher and master storyteller, he had the rare ability to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds, always ready to offer a listening ear or a word of wise counsel.
He was a proud graduate of Rocky Gap High School, Hiwassee College, Emory and Henry College, and Duke Divinity School. Throughout his ministry, Ralph mentored many entering the clergy, nurturing their spiritual and personal growth. His commitment to mission work took him near and far—supporting disaster relief efforts in the Southeastern U.S. and contributing to international outreach projects.
Ralph served as Spiritual Director for numerous Emmaus Walks within the Highlands and Sonrise Emmaus Communities. He was also actively involved in several civic and fraternal organizations including the Elbert Munsey and Abingdon Masonic Lodges, Kazim Shriners, and the Narrows Kiwanis Club. His leadership extended deeply into youth ministry, including over 20 years with the Holston Conference’s Resurrection event and many summers as director of Camp Laurel.
Ralph had a special heart for children and youth, always seeking to nurture the next generation in faith and character. In honor of that lifelong dedication, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to support Memorial Scholarships for children attending Camp Dickenson. Contributions may be sent to: Camp Dickenson Scholarship Clinch Mountain District UMC Post Office Box 263, Abingdon, Virginia, 24212.
A Private Burial will take place at Holston Conference Cemetery in Emory, Virginia.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the Abingdon United Methodist Church at 5:00 P.M.
Frost Funeral Home and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family of Dr. Ralph M. Kidd.
