Rachel Ilene Hurley Powers, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 17th at Johnston Memorial Hospital with family by her side. Rachel was born in Green Cove Virginia on October 29, 1934, to Harvey Dickson Hurley and Martha Della Edmondson. She was the last living sibling in her family of 7 sisters and 3 brothers. She was predeceased by her devoted husband Max Kilmer Powers of Whitetop Virginia and is survived by two loving sons, Gregory Alan Powers who resides in Santa Fe New Mexico and Emory Virginia and William Henry Powers of Emory and her grandchildren Liam, Jacob, and Angus; and 2 great grandchildren.

Rachel worked in the Insurance Business and Banking and Accounting as well as being a stay-at-home mother and homemaker at times. She was a member of the Eastern Star, a member of the United Methodist Church and a proud descendant of ancestors that served in the American Revolution and many famous leaders of the Protestant Movement in Europe in the past.

Rachel was a vibrant energetic woman who welcomed all into her home with generosity and kindness and was a true patriot who believed in the principles and values of America and was a woman of great faith. She was proud of her humble beginnings in the mountains of Virginia. She enjoyed feeding everyone, cooking, canning produce, making jellies, gardening, and spending time with her family and friends. Rachel had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed telling funny stories about her family that took place when she was growing up in Green Cove.

Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at Emory and Henry Chapel with Sharon Wright officiating. Interment will follow at Green Cove Cemetery.

Flowers may be sent in memory of Rachel and/ or copies of current and old family photographs and written memories of the family can be contributed to a future book currently being composed, celebrating the life and ancestry of Rachel. Monetary donations in Rachel’s memory can be made to the Foundation Fighting Blindness.
