Phyllis E. Briscoe

Abingdon, Virginia

Phyllis Evans Briscoe of Abingdon, Virginia went to be with the Lord on November 3, 2023. She was surrounded by her loving family. She is greatly missed, and a huge hole is left in the hearts of all those who loved her.

Phyllis was born on May 27, 1937, in Bluefield, West Virginia and was the only child of Karl and Margaret Evans. When Phyllis attended King College in Bristol, Tennessee, she met the love of her life, Robert “Jack” Briscoe. They had three children: Robbie, Laurie, and Lisa. The enduring marriage of Phyllis and Jack lasted an incredible 60 years.

Helping special needs children was what Phyllis spent most of her life pursuing. She was a respected special education teacher in Washington County, Virginia, and then went on to become the Director of Special Education. In these roles, Phyllis touched the lives of many children and teachers as an advocate and as a mentor.

In addition to her career, Phyllis was an active member of the Green Spring Presbyterian Church. She had a strong and abiding faith in the Lord. She served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the CARE committee, and a circle leader. She also volunteered at a thrift store and with Meals on Wheels.

Phyllis loved her family and friends, baking, decorating for holidays, chocolate, and dogs. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend whose vibrance for life, concern for others, and love of the Lord guided her steps throughout her long life. When Phyllis entered the kingdom of heaven, the Lord surely said, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Phyllis is survived by her three children: Robbie Briscoe of Black Mountain, North Carolina, Laurie (Alan) Hale of Christiansburg, Virginia, and Lisa (Thomas) Miller of Riner, Virginia. She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Hans Suhs, Benjamin Briscoe, Kendra Hale, Laurel Miller, and Samuel Briscoe.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Beau Briscoe and Carol, Mark, and Dakota White. Their many acts of kindness over the years allowed Phyllis to live independently in her home until the very end of her life.

Visitation for Phyllis will take place at Green Spring Presbyterian Church on November 5, 2023 from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. with services immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the church’s cemetery fund.

Beau Briscoe, Mark White, Dakota White, Benjamin Briscoe, Samuel Briscoe, and Hans Suhs will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Frost Funeral Home and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Phyllis Briscoe.
