Peggy Lawrence Hughes

Peggy Lawrence Hughes, 91, passed away on Monday, November 3, 2025. She was born on July 7, 1934, in Yukon, West Virginia, to the late Fitzhugh Lee Lawrence and Dixie Minnie Hodges Lawrence.


Peggy was a 1952 graduate of Northfork High School, having attended Switchback Elementary and Elkhorn High in West Virginia.


Peggy’s working life reflected her love of people and service. She was a secretary at Abingdon High School for 17 years and previously worked at the Quality Dress Shop in Northfork, West Virginia, as well as for Dr. Hulvey and Dr. Gardener in Abingdon, Virginia.


At age 15, Peggy accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at Northfork Baptist Church. She later became a member of Abingdon Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, in mission groups, and in the choir.


In December, Jim and Peggy would have celebrated 75 wonderful years of marriage. Peggy and Jim were married on December 23, 1950, in Tazewell, Virginia, and she always said he was “the dearest man on the earth”.


She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Gloria L. Tate, Edna McMillen, and Burma L. South; five brothers, Ryan Lawrence, Emory Lawrence, Lane Lawrence, Mark “Buddy” Lawrence, and Lyle Lawrence; and one loving son, Jimmy Hughes.


Those left to cherish her memory include her devoted husband, James C.C. Hughes; two daughters, Mary Oley (Mike) and Beth Endean (Bill); six grandchildren, Lauren O. Knott (Kevin), Stephanie H. Wyvill (Colin), Billy Endean (Tabitha), Megan Oley, Bo Endean, and Taylor Oley; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special family member, Cathy Jensen.


A visitation will be held on Friday, November 7, 2025, from 12:00 P.M. until 1:00 P.M. at Abingdon Baptist Church in Abingdon, Virginia, with a funeral service to follow at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Bill Bryan officiating. A private interment will be conducted on Monday, November 10, 2025, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon, Virginia.


Pallbearers will be Kevin Abel, Denny Farmer, Ken Farmer, Shane Lawson, Larry Sullins, Bill Endean, Bo Endean, and Billy Endean.


In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association at 1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28201, or to St Judes Children’s Research Hospital at 501 St Jude PL, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
