Melvin Lambert

Melvin Lambert, 89, passed away April 19, 2023, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia.

Melvin was born in Big Sandy in McDowell County, West Virginia.

He was the last survivor of the nine children of the late Oscar and Arvenia Lambert. He was a devoted family man.

Melvin was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp and retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Melvin had a great caring for his community. After his retirement, he worked for the Washington County School System and then Highlands Community Services where he was a residential counselor. Melvin was an avid church softballer in his younger days and later in life, developed a love for golf which he spread to family, friends, and his clients at Highland Community Services. Melvin was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. Melvin loved life, had a kind heart, and would do for others that which he would not do for himself. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife and devoted caregiver of 67 years, Shirley Hill Lambert. A loving father to his son Charles K. Lambert; his adoptive son Jerrod Michael Lambert; grandson, Christopher Thomas Lambert; and his great-granddaughter, Isabelle Lambert.

A Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Abingdon, Virginia. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 P.M. with Rev. Dalton Richardson officiating. A committal service will take place at 1:00 P.M. Monday, April 24, 2023, at St. John’s Episcopal Church Cemetery at Grub Hill in Amelia, Virginia. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:45 P.M.
