Marie J. Salyer






Marie J. Salyer, 90, of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at her home.


She was born on January 12, 1932, in Castlewood, Va., to the late Charles Nat Johnson and Pearl Lee Austin Johnson.


In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald Salyer; five brothers, Elmer Lee Johnson, Jim Johnson, Stanford Johnson, Marvin Johnson and Bill Johnson; and three sisters, Mary Ellen “Bo Peep” Johnson, Thelma “Dookee” Johnson and Lorriane Johnson.


Marie loved the outdoors. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed camping and spending time antiquing.


Survivors include two children, Deena Dollar (Charles) and Shane Salyer; a special daughter-in-law, Missi Salyer; three grandchildren, Dustin Salyer, Timber Guymond (Aaron) and Shana Salyer; five great grandchildren, Sylas Easterly, Levi Guymond, Kaiden Guymond, Sophie Guymond and Cobain Salyer; two sisters, Sandra Dorton (Russell), Elainie Helbert (Snake); one brother, Ramond “Teny” Johnson; three sisters-in-law, Mary Johnson, Martha Johnson and Sarah Johnson; several nieces and nephews.


The family wishes to express their gratitude to Elite Hospice and her caregiver, Freda Watson for the care shown to Marie.


Visitation will be from 11 a.m., to 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, April 5, 2022, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 12 p.m., in the chapel. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.


Pallbearers will be Dustin Salyer, Greg Johnson, Anthony Johnson, Daniel Salyer, Jimmy Lynn Johnson and Lee White. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Roe, Ralph Grag, Preston Cardwell, Michael Booher and Aaron Guymond.


In lieu of flowers memorial gifts can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, 322 Eighth Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
