Lois Darlene Street

Updated: Apr 30

Lois Darlene Street of Abingdon, Virginia returned to her Heavenly home on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.  Her favorite color was yellow, which made sense because she was a ray of sunshine to anyone who would encounter her.

Lois was born on June 16, 1956, and raised in Morristown, Tennessee.  She moved to Tazewell, Virginia as a young adult and mother.  In 1977 she was employed at Pyott Boone Electronics where she stayed for 37 years working her way from the assembly line to operations manager.  During this time, she became the first person of her generation in her family to earn a college degree, an achievement that made her and her family very proud.  She enjoyed 3 years of employment at Tadano Mantis Corporation as project planner before she retired and moved to Abingdon, Virginia to be near her daughter and grandchildren.  Lois was a hard and honest worker, a respected manager and a valued coworker.  She made wonderful, lifelong friends at her places of employment.

Her ”happy place” as she would call it, was spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren Jackson and Stella Tinsley.  “Mamaw” took every opportunity to create special moments and participate in their activities, never missing a sports game, school play or band concert.  She loved caring for everyone around her, especially her daughter Becky, who she always referred to as “the best part of me”.  She was a loving and doting mother, always ready to help in any way needed from school pick-up to birthday party planning to moral support.  Born the middle of three girls, she was known as “Sissy” by her family and was a loyal and loving sibling to her beloved sisters Gina and Dee Dee.  When they were together it was a delight to hear them giggle as they reminisced.  She loved and cared deeply for everyone in her life and was a loyal and cherished friend to many.

Some of her favorite past times were sitting in the sun, listening to her favorite classic rock tunes, bird watching and enjoying nature, gardening and growing beautiful house plants sketching and drawing.  She loved live music and was the number one fan of the local Steele Cookin’ Band.  She enjoyed attending shows at the Barter Theater, outings with her local friend group “the lunch bunch” and cook-outs with the family, especially her son in-law Bryan’s shish kababs.  Over the years she has also enjoyed bowling, pitching horseshoes and writing poetry and fiction.

She was preceded in death by her parents Kenneth Ray Shiflet and Shirley Katherine Dukes and her beloved grandparents Roy and Georgia Gilmer and William D. and Leona Shiflet.

She is survived by her daughter Rebecca Tinsley and son in-law Bryan Tinsley, grandchildren Stella and Jackson Tinsley, her sisters Regina Glover and Donna Campbell and brother in-law Gregg Campbell, nieces and nephews Adam Glover (wife Amy Glover), Nathan Glover, Tonya Houk and Gregory Cupp (partner Amanda Brummit), and many cousins, aunts, uncles and 2nd and 3rd generation nieces and nephews who she all cherished.

Lois chose to see the good in everything and everyone.  She was patient, kind, forgiving and empathetic.  She was a living example of love as described in I Corinthians 13: 4-8.  She will be deeply missed by so many whose lives she made better in big and small ways.  We will always “love her to the moon and back”.

Family visitation will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel at 5:00 P.M. followed by a memorial service at 6:30 P.M. officiated by the Reverend Robert Smith of Greeneville, Tennessee.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Feeding Southwest Virginia in honor of Lois. Home | Feeding Southwest Virginia
