Lloyd Alven “Avie” Ward

Lloyd Alven “Avie” Ward, age 87, of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Monday, July 23, 2018, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

He was born on April 28, 1931, in Saltville, Va., to the late Paul L. Ward and Mary Katherine Poston Ward.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Lloyd was a United States veteran having proudly served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War.  He was a graduate of Rich Valley High School and Virginia Tech before receiving a Master’s degree in Chemistry from Randolph Macon.  Following graduation from Randolph Macon he taught for 24 years in the Riverview School System as a high school Chemistry teacher before retiring in 1985.  Lloyd was an avid sports fan and loved supporting Virginia Tech and the Ohio State Buckeyes.  He also enjoyed spending time in the outdoors especially fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rosie Ward; two children, Lynn Gilbert and husband David of Tazewell, Va., and David Ward and wife Tammy of Elkview, WV; four grandchildren, Michelle Ward Bare and husband Joseph, Sharon Navarre-Burch, Brian Navarre and wife Ashley and Rachel Ward; five great grandsons; two sisters, Beulah Harris and Patty Ward; two brothers, Louie Ward and wife Mary and Tim Ward; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2018, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel.  A service will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel with Rev. Dr. David Gilbert officiating.  Military honors will be provided at the service by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the United States Air Force Honors Team.  Honorary pallbearers will be David Ward, Brian Navarre, Tim Ward, Zack Ward and Jake Westfall.

At the request of Mr. Ward cremation will follow services.
