Lenora McDonald Smith

Lenora McDonald Smith, 74, passed away on September 5, 2023, at her home in Damascus, Virginia. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 16, 1949, the daughter of Lee McDonald and Dorothy Coonts McDonald. She was a graduate of Kenwood High School in Baltimore and a 1970 graduate of Radford College. In 1970, she began work as the 4-H Coordinator for Washington County, Virginia, and later became an extension agent. She and her husband, Leonard, were married on May 30, 1971.


Lenora served tirelessly with her husband in ministry for 48 years in churches in Russell, Washington, and Smyth counties. She had a special passion for handbells and established and directed the handbell choir at Carvosso United Methodist Church.


She is survived by her husband, Reverand Leonard Smith, and her daughter Kristi Slaughter, granddaughter Kassidy Slaughter, her sister Beth Sheffield (David), sisters-in-law Becky Holliday (Tom) and Donna Smith, and several nieces and nephews.


A celebration of Lenora's life will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. at Carvosso United Methodist Church in Abingdon, VA. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. –7:00 p.m. at the church immediately preceding the service. A committal will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, Virginia, on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. Those wishing to attend the committal are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:45 p.m..
