Larry Allen McClure

Updated: Jun 30

March 21, 1944 – June 25, 2025

Larry Allen McClure, 81, went to be with his Lord on June 25, 2025. Born in Harmon, Virginia on March 21, 1944, Larry moved to Chilhowie in 1949, where his lifelong passion for automobiles began. As a teenager, he worked for Gene Little, a job that ignited a love of cars that would define his life.

Larry attended RPI for two years before choosing to follow his heart and enter the automotive world full-time. Alongside his brother Ed, he founded McClure Motor Sales. In 1980, he partnered with Tim Morgan to open Morgan McClure Chevrolet in Coeburn, Virginia. Three years later, Larry and Tim joined Ed, Jerry, and Teddy to create Morgan-McClure Motorsports, a team that made its mark on the NASCAR Cup Series. Under his leadership, the team claimed 14 victories, including a cherished first win at Bristol Motor Speedway and three unforgettable Daytona 500 wins—milestones that were highlights of Larry’s racing journey.

Though he officially "retired" in 2017, Larry's love for classic cars never faded. With Jerry McClure reopening McClure Motor Sales, Larry continued to find joy in tracking down vintage automobiles across Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina. He truly lived and breathed cars, a passion that never left him.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Midge McClure; his mother, Hettie Lester; sister and brother-in-law, Loretta and Jim Cooper; sister-in-law Nancy Jane Brown McClure; nephew Eric McClure and his niece, Whitney M. Cooper.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ginny; brothers Ed (Lee), Teddy (Sarah), Jerry (Sue), and Gerald (Ruth), all of Abingdon; Jim of Chevy Chase, Maryland; and Michael of Florida; sister Betsy (Roy) of Las Vegas; sister-in-law Wilma; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and special friends. He also leaves behind his cherished fur baby, Prissy.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. at Highlands Fellowship Church on Watauga Road. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Highlands Fellowship Food Pantry or a charity of your choice in Larry’s memory.
