Abingdon, Virginia
Karol Neff Wilson Gray, 76, passed away peacefully in Abingdon, VA on June 23, 2023 surrounded by family and friends.
She was born in Abingdon, VA and graduated from Abingdon High School. Karol loved teaching and learning. She graduated from Lincoln Memorial University with Bachelor of Arts in Education as salutatorian and Tusculum University with a Master of Arts in Education. She continued her many learning interests by reading and studying at the College of Older Adults at Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. She taught in the public school system for many years, beginning her career in the Libertytown, MD School System. She returned to Virginia to assume responsibility for her family farm. She worked in the Smyth County School System and ultimately retired from Washington County Schools where she taught at Greendale Elementary School, Damascus Elementary (Rock School) and Damascus Middle School. While teaching and raising their three sons, she spent countless hours working alongside her husband on their dairy farm, Rising Sons Dairy. Nothing made her happier than having their home full of the boys and their families. She loved watching her grandchildren play and being on the sidelines for their activities. She also enjoyed volunteering at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Karol was an active member in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She attended Bethel Presbyterian Church, and never forgot the lessons learned in her Sunday School class. Karol touched many people during her lifetime as a wife, daughter, mother, friend, or teacher. Throughout her life she showed kindness and courage, even during her battle with cancer.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Neff Wilson, and father, Luke Woodrow Wilson.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Bobby Charles Gray, and three sons, Jeff Gray (Melissa), Travis Gray, and Adam Gray (Mayumi), and eight grandchildren - Parker, Connor, Kai, Zoe, Nami, Thomas, and Georgia Gray and Zac Dickerson.
Special thank you to Eula Grant and Sue Foglesong for care during her last days.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 3, 2023 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 19391 Bethel Road, Abingdon, VA from 4 to 6 pm. Funeral will follow at 6pm. Reverend Jim Walker to preside. Graveside service at Neff Family Cemetery will be held privately.
