Joyce Inez Dye Rhoten


Abingdon, Virginia


Joyce Inez Dye Rhoten, age 88, of Abingdon Virginia passed away on February 11, 2024.


Joyce was born in Abingdon on October 14, 1935, a daughter of the late Clyde and Gracie Pippin Dye.


Joyce worked numerous jobs outside of the home, all while raising her five children.  She was known for being employed at the Abingdon Bus Depot, Martha Washington Inn, Dutt & Wagner, Golan MFG, and the Rex Shopping Center.


After retiring, Joyce helped with raising her grandchildren and babysitting several other children for numerous years. She loved her family and especially loved cooking wonderful meals at the holidays for everyone.


Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Buford Rhoten; two sons, David Rhoten and Larry Rhoten; two sisters, Darlene Gill and Lois Roark; three brothers, Donnie Dye, Homer Dye and Jack Dye; and daughter-in-law, Connie Rhoten.


She is survived by one daughter, Linda Ball and husband James, Castlewood, Virginia; two sons, Cecil Rhoten and wife Patsy, of Abingdon; and Jimmy Rhoten of Bristol, Tennessee; daughter in law, Andrea Lewis Rhoten.


Joyce is also survived by many grandchildren; Jacob Rhoten and husband Brian Rath, Mechanicsville, Virginia; Nicole Marshall, Castlewood, Virginia; Alicia Smeltzer and husband Lucas; Abingdon, Virginia; Michael Rhoten and wife Sarah, Knoxville, Tennessee; Wesley Ball, Castlewood, Virginia; Hanna Rhoten, Abingdon, Virginia; Haley Owens and husband Ryan, Meadowview, Virginia; Allison Ratliff and husband Josh, Suffolk, Virginia; Courtney Pile and husband Ben, Abingdon, Virginia; Ben Rhoten, Abingdon, Virginia; Josh Rhoten and wife Angeli, Abingdon, Virginia; Becky Rhoten, Abingdon, Virginia. Survivors also include eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Billie Thompson, Danville, Virginia; Pat Cook, North Carolina; one brother, Bobby Dye, Mendota, Virginia; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, a service will follow at 7:00 P.M. with Pastor Craig Barber officiating. Committal service will be held at 2:00 P.M. February 14, 2024, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:45 P.M.
