Joseph Cummings Campbell

Joseph Cummings Campbell, age 78, passed away at the hospice house in Bristol, Tennessee. Born and raised in Abingdon, Joe attended Abingdon High School where he met Barbara who would become his wife. Joe continued his education at VPI, and he and Barbara were married in 1967. They were happily married for 58 wonderful years.


Upon graduating in 1969, with a degree in Civil Engineering, he accepted a position with Texaco Oil in New Jersey. While in New Jersey he obtained his professional engineers and land surveyors’ certification. He remained in New Jersey for eight and a half years and accepted a transfer to Houston, Texas in 1975. He was licensed in New Jersey and Texas.

His career continued for five and a half years with Texaco in Houston, until he decided to return to Virginia to help his dad maintain the family farm. He never regretted that decision as he truly loved farming.


After he returned to Abingdon, he had the opportunity to once again attend his beloved Virginia Tech football games. He always made time for home games and bowl games.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Sutton Campbell and Elizabeth Durham Campbell; his grandparents W.L. Campbell and Bessie Fraley Campbell; J.H. Durham and Lyde Durham.


Survivors include his wife, Barbara; his daughter Catherine Kelly Campbell Kidney (Chad); his grandsons Ethan Campbell Kidney and Alexander Joseph Kidney; his sister Mary Campbell; sister-in-law Kim Millsap (David); and many loving cousins and second cousins.


The family will receive friends from 12:00 P.M. until 1:00 P.M. on Monday, February 3, 2025, at Frost Funeral Home Chapel in Abingdon, Virginia with a service to follow with Pastor Bill Bryan officiating. Interment will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park.


Pallbearers will be selected from friends and family etc.


Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandsons.


In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Ave Suite 1700 Chicago, IL 60601 or Abingdon Baptist Church.


Frost Funeral Home and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family of Mr. Joseph Cummings Campbell.

It was a honor and privilege to have been able to meet Joseph and to care for him I would always talk to him about the John deere tractor he has he always liked it when I talked to him about it and I would tell him about my dad and his back hoe how he used to work so hard all the time Joseph's face would light up from bringing back the memories of him working with his tractor Miss Barbara I never did get the pleasure of meeting you I work graveyard shift at the Rehab center and I wanted to let you know that you are in my prayers and my thoughts at this difficult time.
