John “Wayne” Moretz

Abingdon, VA




John “Wayne” Moretz, 74, loving and cherished son, husband, father, and grandfather passed from this life into an eternity with his Savior Jesus Christ on November 14, 2022 at his home in Abingdon, Virginia.

He was born on April 23, 1948 to John Wintford and Nean Moretz and was a lifelong resident of Washington County. Wayne was a shining light for Christ and was loved and admired by the many people who had the blessing of knowing him. A devoted husband to his wife of 50 years, Carolyn Jean, they had two treasured children: Angela and Christopher. His love and joy were his three grandchildren: Sydney Abigail, Landon John, and Hillel Chi Him.


Wayne proudly served his country as a Corpsman in the United States Navy. For over 35 years he worked in the Engineering Lab at Bristol Compressors. At the age of 71 he decided to return to school and graduated Summa Cum Laude with an Associate’s Degree in Electrical Technology. His favorite things were spending time with his family, working outside, and following NASCAR.


Wayne is survived by his wife, Carolyn Jean Moretz; daughter, Angela Kailasapillai and husband Suthan of Lake Wylie, South Carolina; son, Christopher Moretz and wife Sharon of Woodbridge, Virginia; grandchildren Sydney Kailasapillai, Landon Kailasapillai, and Hillel Moretz; mother, Nean Moretz of Abingdon, Virginia; two brothers Charles Moretz and Eugene Moretz; a sister, Coleen Raines; a sister-in-law, Lynn Moretz; and a large extended family.


Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. November 19, 2022 at Frost Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow with his nephew, Jeff Fritz, officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, VA with military graveside honors.


Pallbearers will be John Moretz, Kevin Campbell, Sam Moretz, David Morrison, Lynn Widener, Tim Widener, Josh Boone, Danny Thomas, and Derek Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be his friends from the Engineering Lab at Bristol Compressors.
