Taylor’s Valley, Virginia

Mr. John Leslie Forrester, 82, of the Taylor’s Valley Community passed away Saturday, September 10, 2022 at his residence.

Mr. Forrester was born April 17, 1940 in Welch, West Virginia to the late Robert Glenn and Effie Lewis Forrester Price. He was a graduate of Damascus High School and loved to tell stories of his baseball and football days as a Damascus Indian with Coach Emory Hill. John served in the Navy aboard the USS Intrepid, and attended Emory & Henry College. John spent part of his working life in masonry and the AFG Glass Company, but took the most pride in his long career as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service. To this day, residents in the community still remember the care, enthusiasm, and commitment to excellence that John brought with him on his mail route. In his free time, John loved to go fishing on the Outer Banks and square dancing, which is where he met Mary. John joined the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren at an early age and remained a life-long and faithful member.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Forrester; one sister, Linda McMurray (Carl); one half-sister, Neva Johnson; one half-brother, Bobby Forrester; one step-son, Robert Stout; two nephews, Chad McMurray and Erick McMurray; several cousins and his church family also survive.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren, 37151 Chestnut Mountain Road, Damascus, Virginia, 60120.

The service will be conducted by Reverend Wallace Cole and Reverend Maurice Widener. The family will receive friends after the service.

The family would like thank nurse practitioners, John Szabo and Sharon Gilbert; Jennifer with Amedisys Home Healthcare; Robin and Shirley with Caris Hospice; and Freddy and Andrew with Lincare for their loving care for John during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Camp Carmel, P.O. Box 884, Linville, North Carolina, 28646 or to The Rescue Dog and End of Life Sanctuary at www.rescuedogandendoflifesanctuary.org.
