Mr. John Douglas Musick, 83, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on April 18, 2022 in Oakton, Virginia after a brief illness.
Mr. Musick was born in Holston, Virginia to the late Henry Grady and Audra Fleenor Musick. In his early years his family lived in various parts of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee, including Saltville, Kingsport, and Johnson City. John spent most of his school age years living in Bristol, VA but always cherished the summers spent at his grandparent’s farm in Holston.
John began driving on the farm at an early age, receiving his first ticket at the age of eleven. The fine for driving without a license was $5.75. He would later use his early driving experience to his advantage and win the automobile driving derby in high school. Mr. Musick was a graduate of Virginia High School. He also earned his pilot’s license and soon traded his car for an airplane. After high school, Mr. Musick would attend East Tennessee State University and Embry Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida, earning a Bachelor’s of Electrical Engineering and Bachelors of Aeronautical Engineering.
Mr. Musick turned his passion for aviation into a successful career that included time as an airline transport pilot, flight engineer, flight instructor, and a commercial pilot. His favorite aircraft (and the one he flew most) was the Boeing 727. After a 34 year with career with United Airlines, having flown the DC6, DC8, Boeing 727, he retired as an airline captain on the Boeing 747-400.
John enjoyed country music, watching sports, hunting, wood and metal working, and being outdoors. John loved mathematics, word problems, brain teasers, and puzzles. He was also an accomplished machinist and enjoyed being able to repair anything mechanical. John was the person friends and neighbors frequently consulted for complex car problems and home improvements/repairs.
Including his parents, he is preceded in death by, one brother, Joe Grady Musick.
He is survived by two sons, Michael (Anna) Musick and James (Gayle) Musick; one daughter, Diane Musick; four grandchildren, Jacob, Elizabeth, Katherine, and Stephen; one sister, Sandy O’Dell; many friends and other extended family members also survive.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. on Friday, April 29, 2022 at Frost Funeral Home with a service following at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. A committal service will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park.
