Jimmy Lee Hawkins, age 88, passed with family by his side at Abingdon Health and Rehab on January 28, 2026.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Walter Hawkins and Hattie Elizabeth Nowlin Hawkins. He was also preceded by three brothers and six sisters.

He is survived by multiple nieces and nephews. In addition, he is survived by many friends, too numerous to individually name.

A retired public servant, Jim served roles as a social worker, schoolteacher, guidance counselor, and county administrator in Dickenson County. As an educator at Evington High School, Mr. Hawkins was remembered fondly by students.

Jim had a love of theater and the arts. During his young adult years, he pursued a career as an actor in New York City. Afterward, he performed as the Red Fox in the original cast in the outdoor drama, “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine”. He continued this love showing patronage to the Barter Theatre, Virginia Highlands Festival, and Bristol Rhythm and Roots.

In 2001, he relocated from Clintwood, Va to Damascus. While living in Damascus, he enjoyed hosting friends and family at his river cottage for the Trail Days festival and music events. As a resident of Damascus, Jim spent time volunteering with the Washington Public Library to assist in fundraising for a new Damascus location. Throughout his retirement, Jim enjoyed vacationing with family, occasional trips to the casino, and horse track.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Bruce Higinbothom, the employees of Amedisys Justine Payne, Tiffany Onate, Angela Denton, Brett Cowan, Lesley Pennington, Brandon Smith, and Robert Farmer. He always looked forward to conversations and laughs during their visits. The family also wishes to thank Will, Jonathan, Nicky, and Trista at Abingdon Health and Rehab for their kindness and compassion shown to Jim during his stay.

Per Jim’s request, no services will be held. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date. In memory of Jim, donations may be made to Barter Theatre or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Frost Funeral Home and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family of Mr. Jimmy Lee Hawkins.
