Jesse Herman (Jay) Combs, Jr., age 85 of Abingdon, VA passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Abingdon Health and Rehab Center.


Jay worked as a dairyman in the Green Spring Community for over 30 years. After leaving the farming business he established the Abingdon Mercantile and Frame Gallery in 1985 and had just recently retired. Jay had the gift of gab and never met a stranger. He was known and loved in the community for his hard work, dedication, kindness, and generosity. Jay served not only his community, but also his country as a Military Police in the U.S. Air Force. Jay loved his family and they were at the center of his life. He enjoyed following and watching all sports but, especially the Virginia Tech and University of Tennessee football teams. Most recently he became a new fan of the University of South Carolina in honor of his granddaughters Grace and Elizabeth. He was an avid reader and had a passion for history. He was a member and former Deacon of Green Spring Presbyterian Church.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Herman and Anna Mae Latham Combs, his sister Betty Jean Combs Barns, and his son Jeffrey Allen Combs.


Jay is survived by his loving daughter Kimberly Ann Combs Dunn and her husband Scott, of Greenville, SC, two granddaughters, Grace Ann Dunn and Elizabeth Scott Dunn, niece Lib Barns Burress and husband Tim, Saltville, VA, and nephew David Barns, Chapel Hill, NC, and many cousins and extended family members.


Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. at Green Spring Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Jon Elliott Martin officiating. A committal service will follow the funeral at Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery, Abingdon, VA.


Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends.


Due to current COVID-19 regulations, we ask that all family members and guests attending visitations and services inside, to please wear a mask and practice social distancing.
