On Saturday, October 26, 2024, James William Cooper passed away at the age of eighty-six.
Jim was born on July 14, 1938, in St Paul, Virginia to Claude and Gussie Cooper. He graduated from St Paul High School in 1956 and the University of Virginia in 1960. On July 20, 1961, Jim married Loretta McClure Cooper. Together they shared three children, Todd, Whitney, and Scott.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his sister, Claudette Cooper, and his daughter, Whitney McClure Cooper. He is survived by his son, Todd McClure Cooper Sr and his wife Carren of Bristol, VA; his son, Scott McClure Cooper and his wife Jocelyne, Los Angeles, CA; seven grandchildren, Will Cooper, Todd Cooper Jr (Britney), Ava Cooper, Stella Cooper, Chad Cathell (Paige), McKinsey Venable (David) and Chase Cathell (TraVesia), and by nine great grandchildren, Peyton Cooper, Lyliah Cooper, Frankie Cooper, Bradley Roberts-Cathell, Mason Cathell, Delaney Cathell, Carter Venable, Bailey Venable and Amelia Venable. Jim is also survived by his sister Linda Simerly (Phil), his Brother/Sister-in laws and many special nieces and nephews.
Jim worked in hospital and home health administration before his retirement. After retiring, Jim founded Cooper & Company where he worked with a diverse customer base including Bluegrass and Country music, NASCAR, and PGA/Masters Golf events. Jim's passion for music was a defining part of his life. He instilled a love of music in his children, taking them to numerous music festivals and concerts spanning Bluegrass, Country, and Rock & Roll. Jim was an active member of the Rhythm and Roots Board for several years and enjoyed music of all genres. He was always curious about what others enjoyed and never met a stranger. He often began introductions with “If I were to get in your car for a ride, what music would be playing if I turned on the radio?”
We will always remember the sound of Jim's laughter after he shared his infamous Aunt Lucy quotes.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the caregivers at Oakmont and Caris who helped Jim over the last few years.
A service to celebrate Jim’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a foundation or charity of your choice in Jim’s memory.
“The music echoes in the emptiness. It reminds us of where we came from and where we are bound.” – David Mutti Clark

Coop was a man of great wisdom and touched the lives of many, including myself. I will always cherish his warm smiles and the countless Aunt Lucy stories he shared. His legacy will live on through all of us who were fortunate enough to know him and spend time with him.
Scott sorry for the loss of your father you will be in my prayers
My heartfelt condolences to all of Jim's family and friends. He loved music which is how we met as I worked for Sony Music Nashville. He always had a cheerful nature, a joke and an unmistakable laugh. He will truly be missed.
