James Robert Atkins III, 69, passed away January 02, 2021 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was born October 13, 1951 to James Robert and Violet Grantham Atkins in Pulaski, VA.
Mr. Atkins joined the United States Air Force in 1974 serving as a Security Forces Canine Handler and also serving in the Vietnam War. During his spare time, he enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in different athletic events, playing musical instruments and also being the drummer in the band “The Captives”. He retired from AEP after 35 years. Above all he cherished the time he spent with his family and friends.
Preceded in death include his father, James Robert Atkins II; and sister Diane Rowland.
Survivors include, his loving wife of 32 years, Sharon Greer Atkins; mother; Violet Atkins; son, Jimmy Atkins and wife Tabitha; daughter, Amy Perrigan and husband Keith; brother, Larry Atkins and wife Debbie; sister, Renee Atkins; grandchildren, Alexis Kennedy and husband Josh, Isaac Perrigan, Austin Atkins and Cameron Atkins; great grandchildren, Paxton Perrigan, Brayton Kennedy and Macie Kennedy.
A graveside service will be held 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 06, 2021 at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, VA. with Pastor Robert Blevins officiating. Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the United States Air Force will be conducting military rites.
Serving as pallbearers will be, Isaac Perrigan, Austin Atkins, Cameron Atkins, Sam Altizer, Michael Finley, Travis King, and Wesley King. Honorary pallbearers, Johnny Warden, Alan Warden, Josh Kennedy, and Shawn King.
Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:15 AM.
In accordance with COVID-19 regulations, all those attending services are asked to wear face coverings and follow social distancing guidelines.
