Irvin King Brown

Abingdon, VA

Irvin King Brown passed away peacefully while sleeping on March 24, 2023 at Commonwealth Sweet Memories Unit. Irvin was a lifelong resident of the Green Spring Community of Washington County Virginia. Irvin was raised on the family farm by his parents Bradley and Fannie Poe Brown, along with his older brother Preston. Irvin inherited his parent’s love of farming and at an early age started his life-long career as a dairy and cattle farmer. He spoke often of his early adventures of skipping school to work on the farm. After his father’s death, Irvin and his brother operated Brown Dairy Farms for over 30 years. Over his life, Irvin received numerous awards and recognitions for his farming achievements. Irvin “retired” from dairy farming in 2010, but continued to farm beef cattle up until his illness no longer allowed him to. He still supervised his son, David, and longtime employee Joey Payne as they continued the operation. Irvin inspired many of the current farmers in Washington County.

Irvin was a life-long member of Green Springs Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon for many years. He also served on the Boards of Farm Bureau and Washington County Southern States Co-op. Irvin thoroughly enjoyed NASCAR racing and spent most Sunday afternoons either in his recliner or his truck listening to the race.

Irvin is survived by this wife of 60 years, Sally, his son, David Brown; daughter, Nicole Cahoon; and his son-in-law Blair; his grandson, Chris Cahoon and his fiancé Carrie Beth Workman; grandson Nick Cahoon; he is also survived by his brother, Preston (Yvonne) Brown; brother-in-law Bill (Rita) Mink; sister-in-law Annis Wagner; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thanks for the care he received at Commonwealth Sweet Memories. The staff took great care of him and he enjoyed racing in his wheelchair down the hallways with them. The family would like to also thank Dr. Shawn Nelson of Ballad Neurology for all his assistance during Irvin’s illness.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at Frost Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 29, 2023 in the Green Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Rev. Jerry A. Eggers and Rev. Deidra Crosby officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:45 A.M.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Green Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund or the Michael J. Fox Parkinson Foundation.

Frost Funeral Home and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family of Mr. Brown.
