Howard Lawrence Payne, Sr. “Larry”, 73, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on March 31, 2022 at his residence.
He was born December 23, 1948 to the late Rev. Joseph Franklin and Mary Clark Payne.
Mr. Payne served his country in the United States Navy. He loved to work in his garden, was a talented wood worker, an avid walker, and a music lover. He was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, chairman of the property committee, and co-chairman of ushers and greeters. He always had a welcoming smile and a warm greeting.
Including his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister, Ann Mowell; and one brother, Frank Payne.
Survivors include, his loving wife of 23 years, Rose Payne; son, Howard Payne Jr. and wife Karen; daughter, Penny Payne; grandson, Sawyer Payne; nephew, Joe Payne; niece, Kelly Payne Briggs-Waldrop; also, a large extended family who loved him dearly.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April, 02, 2022 at Abingdon Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Abingdon Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Bryan and Rev. Steven Pollard officiating. A committal service will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Abingdon Baptist Church.
