Howard Henderson Stovall, 84, of Glade Spring, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. Born on December 13, 1940, he was the beloved son of the late James and Bina Norris Stovall.
Howard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and best friend to his wife, Judy Eller Stovall for 61 years. He found great joy in life’s simple pleasures—attending the Masters Golf Tournament with his wife and sons, cheering on the University of Tennessee football team as a passionate supporter, and traveling the world with his wife.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers James Stovall Jr., Eugene Stovall, and William "Billy" Stovall; and his sisters Mary Ann Stovall Shepherd, Helen Stovall Lane, Ruby Stovall Clark, and Mildred Josephine "Suzie" Stovall Martin.
A man of deep faith and community, Howard was a longtime member of Old Glade Presbyterian Church, where he served faithfully on the session. He gave generously of his time through weekly meal delivery outreach and other church service programs. Howard was also an original member of the Glade Spring Jaycees Charter.
He had a fulfilling career, working for Appalachian Power Company for 34 years and 5 years with the Virginia Department of Transportation in the highway division.
He is survived by his cherished wife, Judy; two sons, Michael Howard Stovall and Stuart Wesley Stovall (Mary Collins Stovall); and two adored grandsons, Luke Wesley Stovall and John Nolan Stovall. He also leaves behind his beloved grand-dog, Knox, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. at Old Glade Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Rev Elizabeth Patrick officiating.
Pallbearers will include Luke Stovall, John Stovall, Kyle Sensabaugh, Gerald Hayes, Jim Hutton “Mailman Jim”, Patrick Buchanan, and Tony Surber.
Honorary Pallbearers will include Dr. William Handy, Marvin Taylor, Brian Taylor, Kevin Taylor, Colby Taylor, Larry Brown, Raymond Fisher, Warren Kennedy, James Thomas, Richie Thomas, Rick Call, Bobby Hammond, and Steve Johnston.
The family requests donations be made to Old Glade Presbyterian Outreach, Weekly meal delivery and the Blessing Box.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Pulmonology Department at Duke University Hospital, with special appreciation to Dr. Christina E. Barkauskas. We are also deeply grateful to the dedicated staff of Caris Healthcare—Tamie Jo, Steve, Sue, Amanda, Michelle, Hannah, Tom, Megan, Christina “The Spa Lady,” Rebecca, Hope, Jodi, and Chaplain Cuss—for their compassionate care.
A special thank you as well to Teri Jarnigan, Annie Grace and our beloved girls Penny, Maya, and Emmy, the members of Old Glade Presbyterian Church, the congregation of Parker Chapel in Chilhowie, Virginia, and the congregation of Harmon’s Chapel Christian Church in Shady Valley, Tennessee.
Howard's steady presence, generosity, and gentle humor will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
