Hazel Elizabeth Poe Phillips

ree

August 20, 1933 — September 30, 2025

Abingdon, Virginia

Hazel Elizabeth Poe Phillips, of Abingdon, VA, lived 92 years and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. She was born on August 20, 1933, in Washington County, VA, a daughter of the late Emmett Clifton Poe and Fressie Barker Poe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers E. C. Poe, Glen Poe, Boyd Poe; and a sister Midge Poe Self.

Hazel was a devoted wife and mother, a quiet thoughtful person who loved God, her family, and gardening. She was a much-loved room mother when her children were enrolled at Cleveland Elementary School. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and shared her pearls of wisdom with them as they grew up. She enjoyed music, especially Glenn Miller, The Statler Brothers, The Oak Ridge Boys, and gospel and bluegrass groups at the Watauga Chapel.  Hazel enjoyed traveling with her husband when he retired—especially when they visited Amish Country and Lake Louise in Canada. She was a quiet person, very patient and kind, who liked to stay in the background rather than be recognized by members of the community for her generosity.

Hazel leaves behind her a loving husband of 73 years, Paul H. (Hal) Phillips, whom she met in Sunday School before she was ten years old, daughter Patty (Pepper) M. Phillips Coleman (Gray), and son Curt W. Phillips (Liz). She was a remarkable role model to her grandchildren; Emily Sarah Phillips (Preston Showman), Amanda E. Phillips, and Jamie C. Perry (Matt).

The family would like to thank very special friends and family members who helped with Hazel’s care; Buddy and Flo Phillips, Preston and Yvonne Brown, Pastor Deidra Crosby, Mary Jane Crosby, and members of the Green Spring community who brought food, music, and encouragement at such a difficult time. The family would like to give special thanks to CARIS of Abingdon for all the exemplary hospice care they gave Hazel and for the support they gave the family when they visited the home nearly every day for three weeks.

Funeral arrangement is as follows: Visitation at 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M., Saturday, October 4th at Green Spring Presbyterian Church; services at 11:00 A.M. officiated by Pastor Deidra Crosby with interment to follow at Holston Valley Baptist Church.

Frost Funeral Home and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Hazel Elizabeth Poe Phillips.
