George Shirl Lewis 12/04/1936 – 9/12/2024
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, George Shirl Lewis passed away of Alzheimer Disease at 87 years of age in the comfort of his home. He lived a life blessed with an astute wit and exceptional sense of humor, a gift for telling tall tales, a love of playing practical jokes, and a kind soul. Service to others was one of his core values: he was a veteran of the United States Army, enjoyed supporting charities as a 32nd-degree Mason and Shriner, and was known to even give his vehicle to those in need – twice.
Born to James Arthur Lewis and Nana Evelyn Forrester Lewis in Taylor’s Valley, Virginia, he graduated from Damascus High School in 1954. Upon graduation, he moved to Washington, DC, where he worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. During his tenure with the FBI, he was drafted into the United States Army, from 1959 to 1961. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to his duties at the FBI. He married Mildred Joyce Bryan on December 24, 1961. They lived in Northern Virginia until deciding to move back to Damascus and beginning their family. At that time, he became a programmer and systems analyst at a time when computers were first being introduced to businesses. He was employed as a coder in multiple companies in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee, including Mead Paper, which prompted them to move to Kingsport, Tennessee, where they lived for 36 years. Ultimately, he retired as the chief of Information Technology at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. In retirement, he worked for Marsh Donor Services and spent time with his grandchildren. He and Joy finally moved to Bristol, Tennessee to be closer to family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Arthur Lewis and Nana Evelyn Forrester Lewis, as well as his older siblings Charlotte Lewis Morrison (husband Harry), Lawrence Edward Lewis (wife Margaret “Peg”), Helen Lewis, Wayne Jackson Lewis (wife Margaret), and Clarice Lewis Holmes (husband Graham).
He is survived by his beloved and loving wife, Mildred Joyce Bryan Lewis; children Cheryl Paige Lewis Blair and Rodney Preston Lewis (wife Adele); grandchildren Caroline Cabell “Callie” Lewis, Quinlan Evelyn Lewis, Preston Montgomery Lewis, Sheryl Sophia Blair, and Mariah Paige Blair; chosen family Beverly Garland Baker (husband Carter), Karter Beth Baker Grimm (husband Matt), Gracie Violet Baker Davenport (husband Brent), Ava Kate Grimm, and Baker Lynn Davenport; and niece and nephews Vickie Lewis Sigmon, Tony Lewis (wife Anita), Terry Lewis, Alan Lewis (wife Sherry), Joe Holmes (wife Wanda), and Phillip Holmes (wife Anita).
A Celebration of Life will be held October 12, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. at Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church Gymnasium.
Frost Funeral Home and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family of Mr. George Lewis.
