Eugene "Gene" Francis Akers

Eugene “Gene” Francis Akers, 87, went to be with the Lord on April 15, 2021 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.


Mr. Akers was born May 27, 1933 to the late Charles Edward “Ed” and Pearl Kestner Akers in Abingdon, VA.


Mr. Akers grew up in the Rich Valley community of Whites Mill. He started his career as a dispatch for the Abingdon Police Department then later served on the Town of Abingdon’s Police Department. He then worked as a security guard for North Electric in Gray, TN and then later retired from Bristol Compressors. Mr. Akers had a love for NASCAR and anything that had wheels, from his Model T’s to his Chevys especially his 1963 Impala. He loved old country music, dancing and his mornings at McDonald’s. Above all he had a love for life and we rejoice knowing we will see him again in heaven. Mr. Akers was of the Baptist faith.


Including his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, LeRoy Akers and C.E. Akers.

Survivors include, two daughters, Denise Hobbs and husband Carlyle, and Paula Reynolds and husband Jim; one brother, Kenneth Akers and wife Nellie; one sister, Annette Hay and husband Elmer; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; also, numerous nieces and nephews.


A graveside service will be conducted at 2 PM Monday, April 19, 2021 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor Jerry Arnold officiating. Those wishing to attend are ask to meet at the cemetery by 1:45 PM.


Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends.


In accordance with Covid-19 regulations, the funeral home requests the use of face coverings and social distancing practices while attending the services.
