Elbert Lee Monk

Elbert Lee Monk, 93, passed away on February 13, 2026.


Born on March 5, 1932, to the late Robert J. Monk and Visa Honaker, Elbert lived a life defined by hard work, service, and deep devotion to his family. He spent over 30 years working as a coal miner with Island Creek Coal Company, dedicating his life to the mining profession. In addition to his years in the mines, Elbert proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Air Force.


Elbert was an avid outdoorsman who found joy in nature, but above all else, he was a true family man. His greatest pride and happiness came from his children, and grandchildren. He will be remembered for his strength, dedication, and the deep love he had for his family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Monk; step-mother, Edna Monk; mother, Visa Honaker; step-father, Clarence Honaker; his first wife, Goldie Monk of 64 years; his second wife, Katherine Monk; three sons, Larry Allen Monk, J.C. Monk, and Robert Bell; one granddaughter, Deanette Dye; one brother, James Henry Monk; and three sisters, Lora Browning, Gladys McGlothin, and Marie Lawson.


He is survived by his two sons, Eddie Monk and Jerry Monk (Joyce); daughter, Connie Dye; two stepchildren, Laura Stout and Steven Scarberry; grandchildren, Jeremy Monk, Christopher Monk, Jerissa Looney, Corey Dye, Maymay Shaughnessy, Phillip Bell, and Laurie Whitworth; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.


Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at Frost Funeral Home with a service to follow at 6:00 P.M. with Pastor Paul Price and Pastor Corey Dye officiating. A committal service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at Mount Rose Cemetery, Glade Spring, VA. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:45 A.M.


Serving as honorary pallbearers are, Skylar Bentley, Jeremy Looney, Robbie Tiller, Jeremy Monk, Steven Scarberry, Christopher Monk and Gary Breedlove.
