Douglas R. "Buddy" Sparks

January 28, 1944 – June 5, 2025

Douglas R. “Buddy” Sparks, age 81 of Abingdon, VA, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Hazel Barlow Sparks and Joseph Wattie Sparks, five brothers Elmer Sparks (Opal), Donnie Sparks (Sandy), Carl Sparks (Joyce), Bob Sparks (Sharyn), and Delton “Stanley” Sparks (Peggy), and three sisters Evelyn Repass (Bill), Jean Dillo (Eugene), and Edna “Sue” Repass (Archie).

Doug was a loving husband to his wife of 52 years, Pamela Neal Sparks, with whom he built a beautiful life centered on family. He is survived by his daughters, Meredith Wampler (Brian), Kira Lammers (Sean), and Kristen Sparks (Ben Carroll), and by seven grandchildren (Alyssa Carroll, Collin Anderson, Selah Carroll, Crosby Lammers, Taylor Wampler, Wesley Lammers, and Ruby Lammers) who were the pride and joy of his life. His eyes would light up in their presence, and his love for them was boundless. Doug is also survived by four brothers, Joe Sparks (Mary), Rickey Sparks (Maxine), Fred Sparks (Frances), Dean Sparks (Anita) and one sister, Janie Sparks Stanger. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.

Born January 28, 1944, in McCamas, West Virginia, Doug graduated from Bramwell High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from Bluefield University, and two master’s degrees from West Virginia University College of Graduate Studies and Radford University. Doug proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life that shaped his strong character and enduring commitment to others. Following his military service, he pursued a lifelong passion for education, working as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor, and principal. In every role, both professionally and personally, Doug remained a teacher and mentor — guiding with wisdom, leading with compassion, and always encouraging others to strive for their best.

Doug was a true West Virginian at heart and a proud supporter of West Virginia University. He loved the game of golf, cherished time at the beach, and, most of all, valued the time spent with family and friends. Doug never met a stranger — his warmth, humor, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. He always laughed and found joy in every situation, teaching those around him to see the good, embrace the moment, and meet life with a smile. Doug will be remembered for his generous heart, unwavering integrity, and the love he poured into his friends and family. He leaves behind not just memories, but a lasting impact.
