Glade Spring, Virginia- Dorothy Mae Gentry Ratliff, age 97, passed away peacefully at her home in Glade Spring, Virginia, on Monday, January 6, 2025.


Born on January 24, 1927, in Damascus, Virginia, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Clinton and Roxie Suits Gentry.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved brothers, T. C. Gentry, Paul Gentry, Gene Gentry, Kenneth Gentry, Hillman Gentry, Don Gentry, and Sandy Gentry; as well as her dear sisters, Ruth McVey, Gay Gentry, and Gladys Gentry; and special son-in-law, Leonard Hunter, Jr.


She is survived by her four children, Peggy McGhee and husband, Roger, Kenny Ratliff and wife, Debi, Jane Hunter, and Luke Ratliff and wife, Pam; six grandchildren, Melissa Hunter Doss, Matthew Ratliff and wife, Grace, Christy McGhee Blevins and husband, Barret, Jason Hunter and wife, Brandi, Kimberly Vaughn and husband, Josh, and Chad Ratliff and wife, Kerri; and eight great-grandchildren, Evan and Ava Mae Ratliff, Katelyn Doss, Noah and Jonah Hunter, Chase and Grayson Vaughn, and Elodie Blevins, all of whom brought joy and pride to her life.


Dorothy was a skilled seamstress, dedicated caregiver to many in her family, and enjoyed cooking and hosting a full house on holidays. The epitome of strength and resilience, Dorothy was the last surviving member of her family from the Greatest Generation. Dorothy’s legacy will live on through her loving family, and she will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and devotion to her loved ones.


Per Dorothy’s request, a graveside service will be held at 12 pm on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Mount Rose Mausoleum with Pastor John Surber officiating. Those wishing to attend are invited to meet at the mausoleum by 11:45 am.

She was a great lady full of love, kindness, thoughtfulness & a pillar of strength!! She loved her family & would do anything & everything she could to help them!! We were blessed to have her in our lives!! To know her was to love her! She will be forever in my heart! Prayers go out to all of her family! I pray God holds them close during this difficult time and gives them peace & comfort !! I'm honored & blessed to have had you in my life!! Rest in peace sweet beautiful lady, till we meet again!
