Donald Richard Cumbow, “Coach Cumbow”, age 74, passed away on July 1, 2019 at his residence.
Mr. Cumbow was the son of the late Leon “Rody” and Nancy Cumbow. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, serving as a teacher for 37 years before retiring from Abingdon High School. He coached basketball, track and field, and cross country. He remained the head cross country coach until his passing. During his tenure, his teams won two state championships and numerous district and region championships. He was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cumbow was preceded in death by his brother, Ed Cumbow.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy Cumbow; two sons, Josh Cumbow (Leslie) of Abingdon, VA, and Jonathan Cumbow (Ashley) of Abingdon, VA; five grandchildren, Taylor, Hayden, Reid, Wyatt, and Ashton; one sister, Anne Overbay of Kingsport, TN; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Friday, July 5, 2019 at Abingdon United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at the church on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at 11:00 am with Rev. Robert Countiss, Rev. Glenn Patterson and Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Neese, Tom Necessary, Jerry Mays, Jamie Dick, Rick Mitchell, Dr. Mark Handy, Allison Newton, and Tony Fritz, former Abingdon High School coaches, and his past and present Abingdon High School athletes.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation East Tennessee, 355 Trane Drive, Knoxville, TN 37919.
