Dan H. Hickok

Dan H. Hickok, Sr, a resident of Abingdon, passed away on September 11, 2022, at the age of 94. He was a graduate of Cleveland High School where he played baseball and basketball. Dan was a World War II Veteran in the U.S. Navy where he served honorably in the Pacific and then as an air traffic controller at the Norfolk Naval Base where he received the Victory medal. Dan worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad for many years in West Virginia where he was born. During this time, he met and married his wife Nancy Williams Hickok. Dan & Nancy returned to Virginia to raise their children, while he worked until his retirement from the Virginia Department of Transportation. Dan spent many years raising tobacco crops to proudly help fund his children’s education.

Dan was predeceased by his parents, Lacy and Margaret Hickok; brothers, Lacy Jr. and Harold Hickok; Nancy, his beloved wife, and by his second spouse, Gladys Kestner Jones.


He is survived by his children, Linda Askins (Cleve) of Springfield, VA and Dan Hickok, Jr (Debbie) of Chesapeake, VA as well as three granddaughters, Amanda Witkowski (Lance) of Fairfax, VA, Melissa Trout (Jason) of Round Hill, VA and Lauren Byrum (Clay) of Chesapeake VA, and three great-grandchildren, Kate, Alex and Carolyn Witkowski.

Dan attended Cleveland Presbyterian and Green Springs Presbyterian churches, and enjoyed the summer music events at Watauga Presbyterian. He also enjoyed watching sports throughout his life, especially his favorite the New York Yankees. The staff at Commonwealth Senior Living were held dear to him through his many months in their care, and Dan’s family sincerely thank them for their kindness and attentiveness to him.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, September 20,2022 at Frost Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow in the Cleveland Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Rev. Kevin Campbell officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 1:45 P.M. to go in procession to the cemetery.


If desired, friends may make memorial contributions to the ASPCA in honor of Dan’s many beloved pets including his dear Callie.
