Charles Leo Krum, Jr.

Charles “Charlie” Krum, Jr., of Abingdon, Va., formerly of Clintwood, Va., died on October 6, 2018, at Commonwealth Senior Living in Abingdon, Va.  He was 79.

Charlie was born on January 5, 1939 in Yoakum, TX to parents Charles and Ray Helen Krum. He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a degree in pharmacy.  While attending college, he met Adina Carty, who would later become his wife and life-long companion.  A couple of years after college, Charlie enlisted in the Army and spent 2 years at Ft. Polk Louisiana.  He later served 2 years in the reserves.  Following his service in the Army, he married Adina Carty, and they soon moved to Fayetteville, NC, where Charlie worked for Eli Lilly.  While in Fayetteville, he was blessed with the birth of his son Brian.  About 3 years later, they moved to Marion, SC, where they opened English Park Pharmacy.  While in Marion, he was blessed with the birth of his daughter Jennifer.  Revco purchased the pharmacy after a couple of years, and they moved to Southwestern Virginia, where he worked for Southwestern VA Community Health Services.  They later moved to Athens, Tenn. for a few years to open Athens Pharmacy.  After selling the pharmacy to Rite Aid, they returned to Southwestern Virginia where he worked for Rite Aid until retirement.  He enjoyed traveling to several countries after retirement.  Charlie felt strongly about being active in and giving back to the community.  He actively participated in the VA Housing Development Authority, VA State Central Committee, People’s Incorporated Board, Dominion Bank Advisory Board, Dickenson County Board of Supervisors, Kiwanis, Civitans, Methodist Church, Optimist Club, Rotary, Knights of Columbus, VA Pharmaceutical Association, and Dickenson County 4-H.  Due to his community service, Charlie was bestowed the honor of being selected a Kentucky Colonel.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Adina Krum, of Abingdon, Va.; his son, Brian Krum and wife Jelena, of Harrisburg, NC; his daughter, Jennifer Plyler and husband Matt, of Charlotte, NC; his grandchildren, Austin and Lauren Krum, of Harrisburg, NC and Ashleigh and Gavin Plyler, of Charlotte, NC; his sister, Shirley Shrewsbury and husband Howard, of Sellersburg, IN; his brother-in-law, Don Carty and wife Pat, of Abingdon, Va.; and his sister-in-law, Marilyn Vaughn and husband Larry, of Clintwood, Va.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ray Helen Krum, of Yoakum, TX; and his in-laws, Claude and Zula Carty, of Clintwood, Va.

A service will be held Friday, October 12, 2018, at 7 p.m. in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel.  Visitation will follow the service Friday evening at the funeral home.  A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 13th at 3 p.m. at Peuther Chapel Cemetery in Clintwood, Va. with Pastor Joe Sluss officiating.  All are welcome to attend and celebrate Charlie’s life.

The family would like to thank the employees at Commonwealth Senior Living for all of the love and care provided to Charlie during his stay.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, Abingdon United Methodist Church, Clintwood United Methodist Church, or Peuther Chapel.
