Charles Edward "Sam" Woolwine

October 5, 1944 - January 11, 2026

Charles Edward "Sam" Woolwine reached his journey's end January 11, 2026. Abingdon has lost a dedicated patron, and the world lost a talented artisan and fly-fishing enthusiast. His infectious laugh will live on for generations.

He was born in Greeneville, Tennessee at Greeneville Hospital to his father James Walter "Jim" Woolwine, Jr. and his beloved mother Vivian Margaret Woolwine (nee Smith). He grew up in Jonesboro, TN along with two brothers, Jimmy Woolwine and George Woolwine (deceased). He attended Jonesboro High School in Jonesboro, TN and then attended East Tennessee State College and finally graduated from Virginia Polytechnic University. He was a Lieutenant in the United States Army and fought bravely in the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife Patricia M. Roberts; son Charles Edward "Charlie" Woolwine, Jr., daughter-in-law Emily Woolwine (nee Atwell) and grandson Knox Woolwine; daughter Rachel Woolwine Davis and husband Jeff Davis. He is also survived by Rachel and Charlie's mother Janet Igo Woolwine.

Sam loved the river and fly fishing with friends and his son and grandson. He made wonderful homemade biscuits and loved a tomato biscuit in the summer. He was a talented woodworker, blacksmith and general contractor. Notably, he was the contractor chosen to remodel The Tavern, the oldest of Abingdon's historic buildings and one of the oldest buildings west of the Blue Ridge mountains. Most mornings you could find Sam, up early, enjoying the quiet with a book and a cup of his favorite tea.

A visitation will be held at 6:00 pm, Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Frost Funeral Home in Abingdon located at 250 E Main St, Abingdon, VA.

Frost Funeral Home and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family of Mr. Charles Edward “Sam” Woolwine.
