Billy Jack Long

Billy Jack Long, age 82, of Abingdon, Va., was at his home on Mendota Boulevard, Monday, October 28, 2019, when the good Lord came and took him to his forever home, Heaven.


Jack was born on September 1, 1937, in Holston, Va. He was the son of the late Edgar J. Long and Leo Clifton Long. He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet Vermillion Long; sisters, Marie Wynegar, Inez Eades and Gaynelle Willis.


He lived most of his life in Washington County, Va. and was employed by Unisys in Bristol, Tenn. for 29 years. He also farmed, raising tobacco and cattle. He was a deacon and member of Greendale Chapel, and sang in the choir.


Jack was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and was always ready to help someone in need.


He married Violet Crystal Vermillion on July 16, 1956 and widowed on November 19, 2017. Jack is survived by his three daughters, Debbie Long, Tammie Kroll and husband Jim, and Valerie Mitchell and husband Rick all of Abingdon, Va.; loving grandchildren, Josh, Tyler, and Julie Kroll, Sierra Mitchell Snider and husband Andrew, Dennis, Alysta, and Eli Mitchell; one sister, Carolyn Lunsford and husband Carl; several nieces, nephews, cousins; a very special nephew, Thomas Daniel Wynegar III and wife Carla; special neighbors, Don and Jeannie Campbell; special friends, Ed Blevins, Mark Hobbs, David Powers, and Dr. Myron K. Guiler of Marietta Bible College; and Jack’s special canine companion, Moose.


The family wishes to express a special thank you to Ballad Health Hospice especially Allison, James and Sherry.


A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at Greendale Chapel with Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 5 p.m. until the time of the funeral service. A committal service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 31, 2019, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Family and friends are asked to gather at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m.


Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, nephews, neighbors and men of Greendale Chapel.
