Betty Hunigan Farnsworth


Abingdon, VA.


Betty Hunigan Farnsworth of Abingdon, Virginia passed away on May 18, 2021.


She was born in the Holston Valley Section of Sullivan County, TN, graduated from Holston Valley High School, and attended V.I. College in Bristol.


Betty was the daughter of Cordie Lou Gray and William Claude Hunigan. She is preceded in death by her husband Tammy Farnsworth and brothers William C. Hunigan and Claude Bud Hunigan, and her brother-in-laws, Earl Rogers and Herbert Stewart. She was preceded in death by sisters Mary Hunigan Stewart and Lyle Hunigan Rogers and her sister-in-law, Bernice Hunigan. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, John Kennedy. She is survived by son, Bob Farnsworth and his wife, Amanda, of Nashville, Tennessee and a daughter, Tamara Kennedy and her husband, Dan, of North Chesterfield, Virginia.


Betty is survived by her grandchildren Alexandra Farnsworth, Shannon Hazelrigg, Ryan Kennedy and Devon Kennedy and her great-grandchildren Hannah Hazzelrigg, Logan Kennedy, Braedan Kennedy and Chance Keen.


Betty was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, the Wesley Bible Class and the Response Circle. She retired from the Washington County School System as an instructional assistant where she spent her teaching career working with special needs children. She had such a fond spot in her heart for helping the less fortunate in her teaching years and afterward where she was an active member of the Response Circle and many outreach programs through Abingdon United Methodist Church.


Betty married Tammy Farnsworth on July 31, 1954. She spent many years as a very supportive football coach’s wife which is no easy task. Always there by his side for the good and the bad, she’s now by his side once again in heaven.


The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to all those who helped care for Betty over the last few years. Special thank you to Peggy Mabe, John and Jeannene Thompson, Barbara Burks, Sandrine Pierce, Patty Stanley, Joyce Ann Vanover, Buna Harris and Gary Hartsock. Also, they want to thank the Abingdon United Methodist Church the support and caring for Betty and Tammy over the many years.


The family will receive family and friends from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M., Tuesday May 25, 2021 in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday May 25, 2021 in the chapel with Rev. Glenn Patterson officiating. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.


Serving as pallbearers will be the Men of the Church. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Wesley Bible Class.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts are suggested to Abingdon United Methodist Church, 101 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA. 24211


In accordance with COVID-19 regulations, all those attending services are asked to wear face coverings and follow social distancing guidelines.
