Ben W. Farley, PhD: husband, father, professor, author, mentor, scholar, minister and friend, died at the age of 83 on December 28, 2018, in Columbia, SC.
Ben was born in the Philippines in 1935 to Bessie (White) and LTC US Army Wirt Farley. He graduated from Davidson College and Union Theological Seminary, and also studied at Le Centre de Villemetrie near Paris. He was minister at the Franklin and Cove Presbyterian Churches in Virginia. He taught at Erskine College in South Carolina for 27 years where he was the Younts Professor of Bible, Religion, and Philosophy, an endowed chair. He was the proud author of many books.
Ben is a son of the hills of Virginia and asked to be interred at the Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon, Va., next to his mother and father. The graveside service will be held Thursday, January 3, 2019, at 2 PM.
Ben is survived by his two sons, John (Norma) and Bryan (Stephanie) Farley and their mother Margaret Dickert, his siblings Marilyn Cowles (Ken), Betty Goodrich, and Jack Farley (Kitty); and his grandchildren Cole, Wren and Anna Farley, Mae Tromsness, and great niece Georgia. He is also survived by his wife Alice Anne, many nieces, nephews, two step daughters and their spouses.
