November 29, 1943 – September 20, 2025
Barbara Ann Butt Cornett, 81, of Abingdon, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025. Born on November 29, 1943, Barbara was the daughter of the late Mary Ellen Witt and Charles Henry Butt, Jr. She was also the beloved granddaughter of Josephine Butt and Charles Henry Butt, Sr., who served as Mayor of Abingdon for more than a decade. Barbara cherished her family ties and took pride in her deep Abingdon roots, which predated the Revolutionary War. She grew up surrounded by the love of her parents, her aunts, Edna and Lillian Butt, and her extended family.
Barbara was a proud Abingdonian and a joyful member of the “Bradley Street gang.” A graduate of Abingdon High School, she continued her education at Emory & Henry College. On July 8, 1969, she married the love of her life, James Lee Cornett, and together they raised two children, Kevin and Ken.
Barbara’s career reflected her lifelong dedication to service and community. At just 16, she began working at Barter Theatre, starting in the box office and later returning in retirement to assist with passbook sales—always considering herself part of the Barter family. She spent her professional career as a Quality Control Supervisor with the Virginia Department of Social Services, where her compassion and commitment touched countless lives.
In retirement, Barbara found joy and purpose in her church, Highlands Fellowship, where she faithfully served on the bulletin stuffing crew and in various groups. She was also known for the tender care she gave to her beloved cats, Kelly and Kirby, who brought her great comfort and companionship.
Barbara’s family extends heartfelt thanks to Oakmont at Gordon Park, especially the memory care team, and to Elite Hospice. Their kindness, compassion, and dignity in Barbara’s care will never be forgotten. Special thanks to Emily, Sarah, and the entire Oakmont staff who welcomed and cared for Barbara as family.
Barbara is survived by her devoted husband, James Lee Cornett; her sons, Kevin and Ken; her daughter-in-law, Carrie; her granddaughter, Emma; and a host of dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Ellen Witt and Charles Henry Butt, Jr.; grandparents, Josephine and Charles Henry Butt, Sr; and her aunts, Edna and Lillian Butt.
A memorial service for Barbara will be held at Frost Funeral Home in Abingdon on September 23, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. with Pastor Allen Jessee officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to the Highlands Fellowship Food Pantry, 22417 Watauga Road, Abingdon, VA 24211.
Barbara’s legacy of service, love, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
