Andy Akers, Jr., age 93, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at Christian Care Center of Bristol, Tenn.
He was born on June 1, 1926, to the late Andy Akers, Sr. and Willie Mae Akers. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters, Effie Swett, Charlotte Gaskill, Evelyn Kathryn Stanley, Cora Jean Akers and two brothers, Crippe Akers and Eddie “Stubb” Akers. Andy had lived in the Abingdon area since moving from Buchanan County 30 years ago. He was a retired coal miner and was of the Church of Christ faith. Andy loved spending time fishing, farming and will be remember as a hard working husband and father.
Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Akers; five children, Lisa Street (Keith) of Bristol, Tenn., David Akers (Peggy) of Abingdon, Timothy Akers (Lisa) of North Carolina, Andy Darren Akers (Missy) of Bristol, Tenn., and Lee Lane (Angie) of Abingdon; two brothers, Roy Akers (Ann) of Florida and Sammy Akers (Shirley) of Abingdon; one sister, Hazel Casey of Norfolk, Va.; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff of the Christian Care Center of Bristol, Tenn. and to a special nurse at Johnson City Medical Center, Jacqlyne Bowman for the care given to Andy during his illness.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 27, 2019, at Frost Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday in the chapel with Pastor Gordon Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
