Andrew Sexton “Bucky” Buchanan, age 93, passed away in the early hours of Monday, June 10, 2024 surrounded by his family.

Bucky was born in Bristol, Virginia on March 18, 1931 to the late Rev. G. Sexton Buchanan and the late Nita Kensinger Buchanan.  After serving four years in the United States Air Force in Biloxi, Mississippi, he returned to Bristol TN where he completed his BA in Business and Economics at King College.  He spent his 34-year career working for American Electric Power Company.  After retirement he volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and helped build many houses.  Bucky will be remembered for his many acts of service given freely to friends, neighbors and loved ones.  He was the community fixer and jack-of-all-trades who never knew a stranger.  Bucky was proud of his handlebar mustache, which was second to none!

Bucky enjoyed building and flying an ultralight airplane and had many other hobbies, including antique cars, motorcycles, and planting and maintaining vegetable gardens. His children and grandchildren will cherish memories of winter ski trips. He was a loyal member of the Abingdon Lion’s Club and Green Spring Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon and Elder.

In addition to his parents, Bucky is preceded in death by his brother David Buchanan and son-in-law, Rev. Dr. S. Marc Sherrod.

Those left to cherish Bucky’s memory include his wife of 72 years, Patsy Byars Buchanan; siblings John Buchanan and Betty Hull; two daughters Elizabeth “Beth” Buchanan (Bob Heath), Melanie Sherrod; four grandchildren, Caleb Gray Sherrod, Hannah Megan Sherrod (Alex Lewis), Jordan Beth Sherrod (Andrew Lepore, fiance), Eden Buchanan Sherrod McAteer (Sam); two step-grandchildren, David Heath (Kristie), Tara DeMontmorency; and two great-grandchildren, Wilder Marc Sherrod-Lewis and Elouise Gray McAteer.

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection of the Life of Andrew Sexton “Bucky” Buchanan will be held on Monday, June 17, 2024, at 4:00 P.M. at Green Spring Presbyterian Church with Rev. Deidra Crosby officiating.  A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to Green Spring Presbyterian Church, 22007 Green Spring Church Road, Abingdon, VA 24211.

Frost Funeral Home and Cremation Services is honored to serve the Buchanan family.
