Updated: Apr 26

Glade Spring, VA

Sylvia Lou White passed away on April 24, 2024 at Commonwealth Senior Living in Abingdon, VA. She was born on March 26, 1940 to Joe and Sarah White of Glade Spring, VA and spent her entire life in the town. After contracting polio at the age of 13, she spent eight months at the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation in Warm Springs, GA. Sylvia's strength and determination did not let the lasting effects of the illness prevent her from a meaningful life. She was a graduate of Emory & Henry College, where she received a Bachelor's degree in Education and the University of Virginia, where she received a Master's degree in Education, and was a dedicated teacher for over 23 years. She began her career in the Washington County School System and also taught in Smyth County, where she started the special education program, and Fairfax County. She spent the majority of her career at Glade Spring Elementary School, where she taught second grade before retiring in 1990. She is fondly remembered by the hundreds of students who passed through her classroom.

After retirement, Sylvia stayed busy with cross-stitch, reading, cooking and baking, and spending time with family and friends. She was also a dedicated member of Byars-Cobbs Memorial United Methodist Church, and attended church regularly until her health prevented her from doing so. She prided herself on her chili, which she happily provided for the church's annual MayFest.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Sarah White, and her brother, Warren White. She is survived by her brother, Steve White of Glade Spring, VA, two nieces, Sarah Beth White (Scotty Almany) of Roanoke, VA, and Emily White of Nashville, TN, her long-time friend and caretaker, Beth White of Emory, VA, and many friends and extended family members.

Per Sylvia's request, a graveside service will be held on Monday, April 29, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring with Pastor Daniel Garrett officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Commonwealth Senior Living and MSA Hospice for their compassionate care during Sylvia's stay. Sylvia had long, full life and positively influenced many during her 84 years. She will be missed.

Those wishing to call on the family may do so at the home of Beth White at 12184 Arbor Street, Emory, VA. In lieu of flowers, Sylvia's family is requesting that donations be made in her memory to the Education Department of Emory & Henry College or Byars-Cobbs United Methodist Church.
