Shirley “Shirl” Vincent Doss

Shirley (Shirl) Vincent Doss, age 59, of Abingdon, Va., peacefully went home to be with the Lord after a brief struggle with cancer on April 26, 2018. He was the son of the late Henry P. Doss and Ora M. Rouse Doss of Abingdon, Va.

Shirl loved life and worked hard all his life even after becoming disabled from a fall. He was a truck driver for many years prior to disability. He was a jack of many trades including auto mechanic and farming. Shirl had a heart as big as Texas. When he told you, he would do a job for you, he would do it, to the best of his ability. He was also a caregiver to his sister Sandra during her battle with cancer. He was a member of Denton Valley Baptist Church.

Including his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Dewey of Richmond, Va., Oscar of Abingdon, Va., and Wayne of Denton, NC.; one sister, Sandra Colley of Mt. Carmel, TN.

Survivors include, one daughter, Samantha Soles and husband Jimmy of Mt. City, TN.; six brothers, Harvey and wife Christine of Denton, NC., David and wife Faye of Richmond, Va., Clayton and wife Dorothy of Crookston Minnesota, Ronnie and wife Evelyn of Denton, NC., John and wife Janie of Bristol, Va., Joe of Lexington, NC.; two sisters, Carolyn Barnard of Bluff City, TN., and Mary Scott and husband Wayne of Johnson City, TN.; three grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends who knew him as “Doss”. A special thanks to his caregivers’ sister Mary and brother John and special friend Jenny Depew, also Avalon Hospice Care and the nursing staff at Cornerstone Village for your loving and tender care shown during his stay.

Visitation for family and friends will be held 5 pm until 7 pm Monday, April 30, 2018 at Frost Funeral Home. Services will be held 1 pm Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at Denton Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Stevens officiating. A committal service will follow in the Montgomery Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be John Scott, Cameron Colley, Mike Blankenship, Tim Eastridge, Sammy Price, and Bill Denton.
