Sanford Lee Bowling, Jr. passed from this increasingly ungodly world into all that his Savior Jesus Christ promised in his new home in Heaven.
He was born in Damascus, Virginia on November 18, 1948 to the late Sanford Lee and Blanche Delia Gilland Bowling. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Samuel and Wattie Susan Rankin Bowling of Shady Valley, Tennessee; his maternal grandparents, Noah Seaton and Flora Sheppard Gilland of Damascus, Virginia; a son-in-law, Daniel Jennings.
Sanford was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during the Vietnam Conflict as a Medical Corpsman. After returning home, he continued his nursing career in medical and industrial nursing for 32 years. After leaving nursing, he went on to work for the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Division of Child Support for several years prior to his retirement.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Janet Bowers Bowling; one daughter, Michelle Bowling Jennings (Josh Howard); one son Trey (Samantha) Bowling; two grandchildren, Robert and Faith Bowling; one brother, Fred (Margie) Bowling; a special nephew, Chopper Bowling; many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, April 2, 2022 at the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren in Taylor’s Valley, Virginia with Pastor Lee Schnelle and Minister Vickie Carter officiating. A military graveside service will immediately follow at Jackson Lewis Cemetery in Taylor’s Valley. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 1, 2022, from 5 P.M. until 7 P.M. at Frost Funeral Home in Abingdon, Virginia or from 11:30 A.M. until 12:45 P.M. on Saturday at the church.
Serving as pallbearers will Chris Galliher, John Gentry, Steve Mann, Eugene Moretz, Matt Davidson, and Randy Forrester.
The family would like to express our appreciation to Dr. Alison Whitman and staff, Amedisys Home Healthcare, especially Jason, Jessica, and Brittany, the staff of Lincare of Abingdon, as well as Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia for the care shown to our loved one.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions can be made in Sanford’s memory to a charity of your choice.
