Nelson Willis “Sam” Cunningham, 77, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at his home.
He was born January 13, 1942, to the late Ed Cunningham and Edith Carmack Cunningham. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Jean Akers Cunningham.
Sam was a lifelong resident of the Mendota community and was one of the original members of the Goodson Kinderhook Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the (Mendota/Benhams) Valley Masonic Lodge No. 93 and currently served on the boards of both Farmers Mutual Insurance Agency and the Riverview Cemetery Committee. He was a lifetime member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. He enjoyed being a mechanic his entire life and retired as an insurance adjuster. Sam will be deeply missed by his family, many friends and the community in which he lived.
Survivors include four children, Buddy Cunningham (Kelly), Travis Cunningham (Heather) all of Bristol, Va., Randy Cunningham (Debbie) of Bristol, Tenn. and Dianne Cunningham of Mendota; two step-children, Angie Earles (Ray) and Donna McCall all of Bristol, Va.; one brother, Jim Cunningham (Alice) Kingsport, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; the mother of his children and lifetime friend, Ruth Cunningham; special niece, Kay Cunningham as well as many other beloved nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at Frost Funeral Home with masonic funeral rites to follow at 8 p.m., by Valley Masonic Lodge No. 93. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday at Pine Grove Baptist Church located at 15180 Barnrock Rd, Mendota VA with Pastors Sam Haynes and Sammy Vickers officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery also located in Mendota VA.
Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
