Matthew Jennings Childers

Updated: Jan 12, 2023

In the early morning hours of January 1, 2023, Matthew Jennings Childers of Abingdon, Virginia, passed away at the age of 47 following a courageous battle with cancer.

Matthew was born on May 28, 1975, to Cecil and Julia Childers in Columbus, Ohio. Throughout his life, Matthew enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors, becoming an Eagle Scout in high school. In 1995, Matthew joined the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly and honorably served his country for twelve years, including several tours overseas. His experience as a Marine led to a successful career in law enforcement as a lieutenant with the Federal Bureau of Prisons at USP Lee in Jonesville, Virginia.

Matthew was an incredibly thoughtful gift giver with a clever sense of humor. His positive attitude never wavered, even in the darkest days of his illness. His selflessness in both serving his country and commitment to his friends and family was truly inspiring. He will be missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Alyaa Childers, and their two children, Michael and Raleigh. He is also survived by his mother, Julia, his brother David and wife, Rebekah, and their three sons, Benjamin, Hugo, and Max. Matthew leaves behind many extended family members and close friends, including Joe Bennett, Lynn Burnette, and Dave Thompson. Matthew is joyously reunited with his father, Cecil M. Childers, Jr. and his brother Greg A. Childers who preceded him in death.

Services will be held at Abingdon Baptist Church, where Matthew was a member, on Thursday, January 5, 2023. Visitation will begin at 12:00 P.M. with the service to follow at 1:00 P.M.

Donations can be made to the Tunnel to Towers charitable foundation.

Frost Funeral Home and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family of Mr. Childers.
