Mary Duncan Owens, 78, of Meadowview, Va., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 03, 2018, at home surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with an extended illness.
She was born November 26, 1939, in Washington County, Va., to the late Gordon and Mollie Duncan. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, George Owens; two brothers, John and Jack Duncan and three sisters, Mildred Shepherd, Maxine Kelly and Sylvia Golightly.
Mary was a 1957 graduate of Meadowview High School and a 1960 graduate of the Johnston Memorial School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse for Dr. Glover and Dr. Moore as well as several other doctors over the years. Mary also worked at the Washington County Health Department before retiring as the school nurse from Emory and Henry College.
She loved her family and spending time outdoors especially gardening and fishing. She will also be remembered for living a life of helping others. She was a member of Smyth Chapel United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her two sons, Keith Owens of Glade Spring, Va. and Brian Owens and companion, Shelia of Meadowview, Va. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give special recognition to her nieces, Jean Musick, Joan Beauch and her caregivers, April Otey and Diane Cochran.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2018, at the Holston Conference Cemetery in Emory, Va., with Minister Ronnie Musick officiating. Family and friends will gather at the cemetery by 1:45 p.m.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers a memorial gift can be made to a charity of choice in her memory.
