Abingdon, VA.
John W. Copenhaver, 73, of Abingdon, VA. went to be with the Lord on January 14, 2021 at Johnston Memorial Hospital after a brave battle with COVID-19.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Rosamond Copenhaver Berry; brother, Bill Copenhaver; precious grandmother, Maude “Mommy” Jones; as well as his beloved dogs, Bernie and Max.
He was a devoted member of Woodland Hills Christian Church – Meadowview Campus. He cherished each and every one of his friends, young and old. He was an avid golfer and supporter of Abingdon High School sports.
One of his passions was to make sure everyone had a full belly just like his own and a life full of laughter. He was one of the most selfless people you would ever meet.
Knowing John, we believe he will be asking across heaven, “Would you like a piece of German chocolate cake … well good, “cause we don’t have any?”
The family would like to extend a special heart-felt thanks to the Johnston Memorial ICU staff and doctors who took such exceptional care of John. Also, to all of the many prayer warriors he had on his side.
He is survived by his wife, Jenny Copenhaver of 49 years; sister, Janie Martin and family; daughter, Kim Kestner; son, Kevin Copenhaver; son-in-law, Wayne Kestner; daughter-in-law, April Copenhaver; six grandchildren whom he loved with all his heart, Megan Holley, Kaitlyn Holley, Nicolas Holley, Caleb Holley, Victoria Copenhaver, Kirsten Copenhaver, and his newest puppy Jake.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 PM until 4 PM Sunday, January 17, 2021 at Frost Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 PM Monday, January 18, 2021 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor Nick Viers officiating.
Serving as pallbearers will be Wayne Kestner, Tom Necessary, Tommy Castle, Brad Roop, Sammy Rhudy, Rob Boothe, Brian Canada, and Casey Barnes. Honorary pallbearers will be Nicolas Holley, Caleb Holley, Tj Taylor, Gabe Boothe, Sean Canada, Nathan Blackburn, Jadon Boothe, and Clay Merriman.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Woodland Hills Christian Church (note: The Table Ministry in the memo line).
